Have you ever asked yourself: what’s my real job?

I’ve been pondering this recently after stumbling upon this message from author, Howard Thurman:

“Don’t worry about what the world wants from you. Worry about what makes you come more alive. Because what the world really needs are people who are more alive.”

And this one from noted psychologist, Lawrence LeShan, who echoed the sentiment, adding:

“Your real job is to increase the color and zest of your life.”

Let’s let that last one sink in for just a sec…

Your real job is to increase the color and zest of your life!

Mr. LeShan basically handed us a permission slip to get into the business of infusing our days with as much JOY as we possibly can.

In other words, our real WORK isn’t the 9 to 5 grind, it’s discovering what makes us happily come more alive and PURSUING those things. Everyday!

Ancient wisdom and modern science (specifically the field positive psychology) have both backed the importance of cultivating joy (and consistently putting it into action in our day-to-day lives) by teaching us that when we tend to our own happiness, we’re much more likely to share that happiness (along with other positive qualities like: forgiveness, kindness and generosity) with others.

As happiness grows, goodness spreads. And it’s that ripple effect of giving that turns out to be what the world really needs from us!

What makes YOU come ALIVE?

Where can you add more COLOR and ZEST to your days?

How can you treat HAPPINESS like it’s YOUR REAL JOB?

Because maybe it is.

Just something to think about.
