WOW! This year has flown by! And while its been incredible – filled with so much learning, growth and adventure – it’s hard to believe we’re just a few weeks away from the new year.

It’s usually right about now that we begin thinking about what we hope to accomplish in the upcoming year.

You might remember – from this post – when I told you that instead of setting New Year’s resolutions, I use a three-question-reflection-ritual to choose a single word that I want to represent my year.

It’s a concept I call The Year Of… and I get asked about it a lot. So, as 2017 is winding down, I thought it would be a great time to share one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from this year’s word – INTENTION – and how it could be helpful to you, too!

Now to clarify, I’ve always been a goal-setter and a planner. I’ve known for a long time that everything you do, make, create or achieve begins with a thought and happens with a plan, but I never really stopped (until this year) to ask:

“What’s my intention with this (fill in the blank – thing, situation, person etc.)?”

There’s a HUGE difference between deciding to do something and actually doing that thing with a clear and specific purpose.

Doing is: taking on that project, having a difficult conversation, changing your diet, interacting with the barista at Starbucks. It’s an action.

Intention is: understanding your reason for taking on that project, knowing exactly how you want that difficult conversation to go, being crystal clear on why you want to change your diet, consciously choosing how you want the Starbucks barista to feel when they interact with you. It’s thoughtful action.

And the big, juicy, life-changing secret I learned this year is this:

When you’re uber intentional about how you want things to turn out, you’re able to consciously create the life you want, faster, easier, and BETTER than you could have hoped.

Why? Because when you’re intentional you…

  • are clear on what you want and what you don’t want
  • make decisions based on your values
  • focus your time and energy on the things that matter most to you
  • eliminate commitments and obligations that drain you
  • connect with others in a more meaningful way
  • open yourself up to new possibilities
  • commit to your goals on a much deeper level

Nothing sparks motivation, kick starts dreams, fulfills needs and desires and ultimately, shapes your entire life experience like deep, powerful, emotionally-charged intentions.

“You are what your deepest desire is. As your desire is, so is your intention. As your intention is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.” – The Upanishads

So try it. Think about something you’ve been planning to do, make, create or achieve – in business or life – and ask yourself…

“What’s my intention with this (fill in the blank – thing, situation, person etc.)?”

I’ll bet you’ll make some fascinating discoveries that’ll help you hit your goals quicker and with a whole lot more meaning.

And even though I’ll be picking a new word for 2018, I plan to keep INTENTION front and center over the next year and beyond.

If you begin using the intention question above, let me know how it goes and what you learn from it.

It’s a great way to take the blinders off and make decisions that come from the heart.

Lastly, on the topic of things that come from the heart, I’d like to wish you and your loved ones a healthy, happy holiday season filled with good intentions and beautiful memories.

I’ll see you in the new year with more great tips and recipes to help you eat better, feel better and live better in 2018.

With lots of love,
